97 sploder tranny fluid?????????

Need to change the fluid in my sploder. It is a 97 auto with the AWD. I am sure i can find the factory recommended but i want to know if anything else is better. Example "mercon 3 was original for my lincoln mark viii but all the performance buffs ran mercon V and it made a hell of a difference." :alx:

yea..go to autozone/advance/parts store..get a drain plug kit...drill an appropriate sized hole in the bottom of the pan that is the lowest..let the fluid drain out...otherwise..it makes a mess...

no other mods for the 4r55e or 5r55e other than the gasket for the valvebody that corrects weak shifts from 2nd to 3rd..PM toolbox about it..he got me one for like $7..

There are shift kit- improvers out there also.I think my owners manual calls for Mercon V 96 up I can check in the morn.

The 5r55e tranny that it says is in with your 97 v-6 engine takes Mercon-V .I know I read it smewhere that the 95's take mercon 4 but I cant find it know and may be changing my fluid again to get rid of the 4 :thwack:

Yes it is Mercron V. I would stick with the recomended. I never had any issues.

Ok what do the tech books say the 95 4r55e takes ?

actually, the 4R70W was factory filled with regular Mercon. Even says "Mercon" on the dipstick.
But apparently there was a TSB out, that said ALL 4R70Ws should be filled with Mercon V.

I would assume regular Mercon
